About Stripe
Stripe builds economic infrastructure for the internet, powering online payments and financial services for businesses of all sizes.
About the role
Our API reference is read by hundreds of thousands of developers every month, and for many of them it is the first real contact they have with the product. When the docs are wrong or unclear, integrations break and support tickets pile up.
We are looking for a Technical Writer on a nine-month contract, starting in November 2026, to help the documentation team rewrite the guides for our payment methods API. You will join a team of six writers and one docs engineer, and work most closely with the two engineering teams that own local payment methods in Europe and Latin America.
What you’ll do
- Rewrite around 40 integration guides, prioritised by traffic and support volume.
- Interview engineers and product managers to understand edge cases, then turn that knowledge into clear steps.
- Write and test code samples in at least two languages:
- required: Node.js and Python
- helpful: Ruby, Go or Java
- Maintain the style guide entries for payment terminology so that translated versions stay consistent.
- Review pull requests from engineers who contribute to the docs, and help them write better.
What we’re looking for
- Three or more years writing documentation for developers, ideally for a public API.
- Comfort reading code and running examples from the command line.
- A clear, direct writing style. We prefer short sentences, active voice and concrete examples over long introductions.
- Experience working with docs-as-code: Markdown, Git, pull requests and review.
- Availability for at least 30 hours a week during the contract.
Nice to have
- Background in payments, banking or fintech.
- Experience writing for an international audience, including content that will later be translated into 15 or more languages.
- French, since a portion of the work covers payment methods popular in France and Belgium.
Compensation and benefits
- Hourly rate of CA$70–CA$85, depending on experience, invoiced every two weeks.
- Contract length of nine months, with a realistic chance of extension or conversion to a permanent role.
- Hybrid setup: the team works from our Toronto office on Tuesdays, and the office is open 08:30–18:00 ET.
- A company laptop and access to all internal tools for the duration of the contract.
- Contractors are invited to team offsites and the annual writers’ summit in March.
How to apply
Please send:
- Your CV or a short summary of your experience.
- Two writing samples, ideally one tutorial and one reference page.
- Your earliest start date and weekly availability.
We will ask shortlisted candidates to complete a paid two-hour editing exercise, followed by a 45-minute interview with the documentation lead and an engineer.
