Penpot

Product Designer

PenpotMadrid, Spain

About Penpot

Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform for cross-domain teams, built with designers and developers in mind.

About the role

We build an open source design and prototyping tool, which means our users are designers themselves. They notice when a menu is one pixel off, and they tell us about it on public issue trackers within hours.

We are hiring a Product Designer to join our product team in Madrid. You will work on the components and design tokens area of the app, which is one of the most requested parts of our roadmap. The team is small: three designers, around twelve engineers, and a product lead who used to be a designer.

What you’ll do

  • Design new features for components, variants and tokens, from early research to final specs.
  • Talk to users every week. We run around eight research sessions a month, and you will lead at least two of them.
  • Work in the open:
    • post early concepts on our community forum for feedback
    • respond to comments on design proposals in public issues
    • present progress at the monthly community call
  • Pair with front-end engineers during implementation, and review changes before they are merged.
  • Contribute to our own internal design system, which is built in the product itself.

What we’re looking for

  • At least five years of product design experience, with a portfolio that shows how you think, not only how the final screens look.
  • Strong interaction design skills, especially for complex, dense interfaces.
  • Experience designing for professional tools, where speed and keyboard use matter.
  • Good written English. Spanish is a plus, since about half the team speaks it day to day.

Nice to have

  • Some experience writing HTML and CSS, enough to understand what is easy and what is hard to build.
  • Involvement in an open source project, as a designer or in any other role.
  • Familiarity with design token formats and how teams sync them with code.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary of €55,000–€68,000, depending on experience.
  • 25 working days of holiday, plus public holidays in the Comunidad de Madrid.
  • Flexible hours, with core hours from 10:00 to 15:00 CET and jornada intensiva (shorter days) in July and August.
  • Private health insurance and a €100/month meal allowance.
  • A €1,500/year budget for learning, plus travel to one international design conference.

How to apply

Share your portfolio and a short message telling us which part of our tool you would change first, and why. We do not expect a redesign, just your honest thinking in a few paragraphs.

Our process:

  1. A 30-minute call with the product lead.
  2. A portfolio review with two designers, where you walk us through one project in depth.
  3. A collaborative session with an engineer, working through a small design problem together.

We do not ask for unpaid take-home design work. If you have questions, use our contact form. You might also enjoy reading the company profile or browsing other design roles.
